OUR WINTER TELEVISION GUIDE MAY CURE YOUR WINTER BLUES

Once again a chill is in the air and depending on your location on the big ol’ world globe it means one thing for the alot of us: The winter blues. So how does one keep from going insane while trapped inside the house 90% of the time they aren’t at work for months at a time due to weather and temperature? By checking out a few of the shows that we know will be worth your time, of course! Keep in mind these are our personal recommendations – there are a number of returning shows that won’t be on this list based on one factor or another. You’re on your own on those!

Winter 2012 Television That Won’t Suck:

ARCHER

Returns: Thursday, Jan. 19 at 10/9c on FX

What you’ve missed thus far: Things didn’t turn out so well for our favorite secret agent’s first real relationship so he did what any normal man would do – he ran away to become the king of a band of pirates on a tropical island. Chaos and shenanigans ensue – and with Archer back at ISIS we can only begin to imagine what they’ve got up their sleeves for season 3. What we do know is that it will be ridiculous, offensive and hilarious.. and we wouldn’t have it any other way.

JUSTIFIED

Returns: Tuesday, Jan. 17 at 10/9c on FX

What you’ve missed thus far: So many things. With walking series highlight reels Boyd Crowder and Raylon Givens bouncing back and forth between being friends and enemies more often than one could possibly keep track of you never really know what you expect in Harlan county. From battling assassins and kidnappers to toppling entire family drug trades – one thing for sure is that this isn’t your everyday police procedural. It’s witty, funny, well written and definitely not one to miss.

SPARTACUS: VENGEANCE

Returns: Friday, Jan. 27 at 10/9c on Starz

What you’ve missed thus far: Spartacus: Blood And Sand was one of the unsung heroes of television during it’s first season run. It wasn’t until episode three or four that it really picked up – but once it did it never slowed down and became one of the finest first seasons of television you’ll see with an ending both satisfying and open ended.. a rare feat in television finales. The follow up prequel mini-series Spartacus: Gods Of The Arena was even better. Behind all the blood and gore and sex is an excellent story loosely based on actual historic events, and the characters and writing do an excellent job of making it feel as if you are watching history as it unfolds. Is this swords and sandals series for everyone? Probably not. But it should be.

THE WALKING DEAD

Returns: Sunday, Feb. 12 at 9/8c on AMC

What you’ve missed thus far: Not much, really. With a new showrunner, a lower budget and a poor choice of how to spend what money they did have – The Walking Dead has shambled through the first half of the second season at roughly the same speed as one of the many walkers that inhabit it’s world. The final episode before the mid season break tied up a few dragging plot lines and has us intrigued and hopeful for the second half, though. Only time will tell if they can dig themselves out of the hole with a strong string of episodes to close out the season.

IMPRACTICAL JOKERS

Premieres: Already airing Thursdays at 10/9c on TruTv

What you’ve missed thus far: One of the most consistently funny new shows on television. The premise is simple – four friends try to embarrass the hell out of each other in a variety of different ways in public situations by forcing them to say things no one would normally say to a stranger. If they choose not to say the suggested bits they’re considered a loser of the game and forced into a punishment at the end of the episode. The cast is funny, the games are clever and the situations always end up hilarious. If you like to laugh give this one a shot – you won’t regret it.

EASTBOUND AND DOWN

Returns: Sunday, Feb. 19 at 10/9c on HBO

What you’ve missed thus far: Kenny Powers being Kenny Powers – that in and of itself should be enough reason to keep you coming back. After returning to North Carolina following a failed trip to Mexico Kenny is now faced with the tough task of putting his life back together.. and sorting shit out at home. Our guess is that it can only lead to further trouble. Hopefully.

THE LIFE AND TIMES OF TIM

Returns: Already airing Fridays at 9/8c on HBO

What you’ve missed thus far: Every day in Tim’s life is an exercise in surviving madness (that he often times gets himself into) and any given day can result in a perilous situation for himself and everyone involved. Witty humor, an excellent cast and crude animation that somehow not only plays into the dark dry humor but gives the show even more charm all make it one that you’ll get hooked on once you give it a chance. As if those weren’t enough reasons to give it a watch – HBO recently resurrected it based on fan support.

LUCK

Premieres: January 29th on HBO

What you can expect: Created by the same mastermind behind one of the best television shows of all time (Deadwood) and directed by meticulous director Michael Mann – this one is shaping up to be a show that you’ll regret missing. The show follows many different characters who all frequent the same race track and with actors that include Dustin Hoffman, Nick Nolte and Dennis Farina you can expect some strong performances.. and perhaps the liberal use of “Fuck” in nearly every sentence. The first episode premiered as a sneak peek after the second season finale of Boardwalk Empire but we’d rather wait until the season begins to keep the time between episodes minimal.

So there you go – plenty of shows to keep you entertained throughout the winter and to keep your DVR full. If you don’t have access to channels such as Starz and HBO be sure to check other (legal) sources such as Hulu or the network’s own website for full episodes.
